My Weight-Loss Journey Since 2021: Struggles, Lessons, and Small Victories

I have been trying to lose weight since 2021, and if I'm completely honest, it has been one of the most challenging journeys of my life.

When I first started, I thought that if I simply ate less and exercised more, the weight would come off quickly. Like many people, I believed that hard work would automatically lead to fast results. But that hasn't been my experience.

Over the years, I have worked hard to control my calorie intake, make healthier food choices, and stay active. I walk three to four times a day for about 40 minutes each walk. I've listened to the advice that we should eat more fruits and vegetables, drink more water, and make better choices overall. I've done my best to follow those recommendations.

Yet despite all that effort, losing weight has not been easy.

There have been days when I felt frustrated because the scale didn't move. There have been times when I questioned whether all my hard work was making a difference. Watching others seem to lose weight quickly while my progress felt slow was discouraging. Sometimes it felt like no matter how much effort I put in, my body wasn't cooperating.

What I've learned through this journey is that weight loss isn't just about finding the perfect diet or exercise plan. It's about creating habits that you can maintain for the long term. It's about consistency, patience, and continuing even when the results aren't showing up as quickly as you'd like.

Why Weight Loss Feels So Difficult

One thing I've realized is that many of us start our weight-loss journey with high expectations. We see advertisements for quick fixes, dramatic transformations, and diets that promise rapid results. When our own progress doesn't match those promises, it's easy to feel defeated.

The reality is that our bodies are complex. When we reduce calories, hunger often increases. Motivation can fade when results slow down. Weight loss rarely happens in a straight line, and that's something I wish more people talked about.

I've learned that setbacks don't mean failure. They are simply part of the process.

The Power of Small Changes

One of the biggest lessons I've learned is that small changes matter more than drastic ones.

Instead of trying to change everything overnight, I've focused on habits such as:

  • Drinking more water throughout the day.
  • Eating more fruits and vegetables.
  • Being mindful of portion sizes.
  • Taking daily walks.
  • Choosing healthier snacks when possible.
  • Getting better sleep.

These changes may seem simple, but over time they add up.

Nutrition Matters

I've also learned that nutrition plays a huge role in weight loss.

Rather than labeling foods as "good" or "bad," I've tried to focus on balance. I aim to include lean proteins, whole grains, healthy fats, fruits, and vegetables in my meals while still allowing myself occasional treats. Completely restricting foods I enjoy only makes the journey harder to maintain.

The goal isn't perfection. It's making better choices more often than not.

Exercise Doesn't Have to Be Extreme

For me, walking has become one of the most important parts of my routine. Walking several times a day not only helps me stay active, but it also gives me time to clear my mind and reduce stress.

I've learned that exercise doesn't have to be intense to be effective. Whether it's walking, cycling, swimming, dancing, or strength training, moving your body consistently is what matters most.

My Personal Choice About Weight-Loss Medications

Another challenge I've faced during this journey is watching the growing popularity of GLP-1 weight-loss medications. It seems like everywhere I look, people are talking about them and sharing their success stories.

I've thought about it, but for me, I've chosen not to take that path. This is a personal decision, not a judgment of anyone else. I understand that these medications can be life-changing and medically necessary for many people.

For me, however, I want to see how far I can go through my own lifestyle changes, discipline, and consistency. I want to know that every pound I lose came from the daily choices I've made choosing healthier foods, going for my walks, staying active, and continuing to show up even when progress feels slow.

Some days, I'll admit, it's tempting to look for a faster solution. When you've been working toward a goal since 2021 and the results don't come as quickly as you'd hoped, it's easy to wonder if there might be a shortcut.

But I've decided that my journey is about more than losing weight. It's about proving to myself that I can build healthier habits, stay committed, and keep moving forward even when things get difficult. The progress may be slower, but the lessons I'm learning along the way are just as valuable as the weight I'm trying to lose.

This path may not be the quickest, but it's the one that feels right for me.

Sleep and Stress Matter Too

Something I didn't fully appreciate when I started was how much sleep and stress affect weight loss.

When I'm tired, I notice I crave unhealthy foods more often. When I'm stressed, it's easier to make choices based on emotions rather than hunger. Taking care of my mental well-being has become just as important as focusing on food and exercise.

Progress Over Perfection

Perhaps the most important lesson I've learned since 2021 is that progress matters more than perfection.

There will always be challenging days. There will be meals that aren't perfect and days when motivation is low. But one meal, one day, or even one week does not erase the effort you've put in.

I've learned to celebrate small victories:

  • Choosing water instead of soda.
  • Going for a walk when I don't feel like it.
  • Preparing a healthy meal at home.
  • Staying committed even when progress feels slow.

Those small victories are what keep me moving forward.

If you're struggling to lose weight, know that you're not alone. I understand how frustrating it can be to work hard and not see immediate results. I've been living that reality since 2021.

But I've also learned that this journey is about much more than a number on the scale. It's about building healthier habits, becoming stronger physically and mentally, and continuing to show up for yourself every day.

Weight loss is not a sprint. It's a marathon. Some days will be easier than others, but every healthy choice is a step in the right direction.

I may not be where I want to be yet, but I refuse to give up. And if you're on a similar journey, I hope you don't give up either.
